Artist Statement | Deirdre Finnerty
2012
Deirdre Finnerty is a contemporary
glass artist from Bray, Co. Wicklow, Ireland and is currently studying an MA in
Glass at the Swansea School of Glass, Swansea Metropolitan University. Previous
to this, she completed a BA (Hons) degree in Architectural Glass in 2011 with a
first class honours at the same school. She has been shortlisted for awards
from the Crafts Council of Ireland and the Worshipful Company of Glaziers in
2011 and she has exhibited work both nationally and internationally. At present,
she is a front-of-house volunteer for the Mission Gallery in Swansea and
teaches stained glass workshops at Swansea Metropolitan University.
Deirdre’s work is centred on
traditions; whether they are personal, cultural or even technical, the act of
continuing and remembering these traditions is what drives her investigations
and explorations in the medium of glass. This could take the form of an
autonomous piece or a site-specific installation. Her own distance from her
homeland has highlighted how important her family life is and its absence is
strongly felt. Through remembering, she feels many emotions which she captures
and translates into glass.
Drawing, mark making, texturing and
layering, blurring and reflecting; through using and manipulating the material of
glass, Deirdre controls what you can see and understand much like how histories
and memories are recalled. Time, distance, the past and the current are all
elements that are intrinsic to the visual language expressed in response to
fragile traditions.
